Igusa, Japanese soft rush, is a plant-based material originally used for Tatami hundreds of years in Japan. Step 1

Planting seeds
Seeds can be planted either manually by hand or using machines, depending on the scale of cultivation, soil conditions, and efficiency requirements for optimal growth and yield.

Triming Igusa soft rush
Trimming should be done once during the growing period, cutting the plant to a height of 45 cm from the ground to promote healthy growth and better yield.
Step 3

Harvestng
Harvesting usually occurs from July to August, around 6-7 months after planting. To maintain the highest quality in the organic system, harvesting is carefully done before sunrise for optimal freshness and preservation.

Natural mad dying
As a plant-based material structured with air bubble in its cells, this process gives humidity control system within the material which is one of the reasons why Igusa has been used in many variants at home for hundreds of years.

Drying
The transformation process converts raw plants into durable and functional materials through harvesting, processing, refining, and treatment, ensuring strength, longevity, and suitability for various applications.

Grading material
Grading is based on length, color, and other factors that influence functionality, ensuring quality standards align with the specific requirements of different product types.
Step 7

Dying in color
Coloring is cosmetic process applied with naturally sourced agents to dye for favour of customers. Yet natural rush colour is one of the most popular finish as in Tatami.

Weaving
Weaving is only the process to create patterns and artwork designs. Surface appearance is determined by means of sewing methodology

Finishing and Coating
Final process prior craft objects, where the flattened finished material is processed for surface protection treatment.

Processing and Crafting
